*What, if any, contribution can Religious and/or Theological Studies
make to the interdisciplinary field of international development studies?*
This call for papers is for a panel proposal being submitted to the
Canadian Association for the Study of International Development's Annual
Meeting at the Congress of the Learneds at Concordia University,
Montreal, Quebec, May 31st-June 2, 2010. The topic of this proposed
panel is, What, if any, contribution can Religious and/or Theological
Studies make to the interdisciplinary field of international development
studies?
In answer to the question, 'What is development studies?' the newly
revised web-site of the Canadian Association for Studies in
International Development provides the following:
The study of how countries 'develop' has long been an important
facet of many different disciplines in the social sciences,
including Economics, Political Science, Sociology, and many others.
Over time a rather parochial understanding of development has been
broadened to include many different aspects of what it may mean to
live in a 'developed' society.
Luckily, what was once a fragmented topic, contained within the many
'silos' of different academic departments, has grown into an
interdisciplinary field that draws on knowledge from all of the
social sciences and humanities.
Religious and Theological Studies are two silos that till recently have
not contributed to this growing interdisciplinary conversation. This
gap in international development studies is beginning to be addressed
through increase attention to the question of the role of religion and
culture in IDS. Though begun, this dialogue remains fragmentary and is
often a monologue within the new silo of IDS.
This past year at the Annual General Meeting of the American Academy of
Religion a three year renewable group consultation on the Religious
Dimensions of International Development was proposed. This endeavour at
the AAR raises an important question for Religious, Theological and
International Development Studies,
What, if any, contribution can Religious and/or Theological Studies
make to the interdisciplinary field of international development
studies?
Submissions are requested for papers that will explore this question
from the perspective of Religious Studies, Theological Studies and
International Development Studies. The purpose of this panel is to
continue a dialogue between RS/TS and IDS and will therefore include a
significant amount of time for questions and dialogue.
The Canadian Association for the Study of International Development
(CASID) is a national, bilingual, interdisciplinary and pluralistic
association devoted to the promotion of new knowledge in the broad field
of international development. CASID is a membership-based organization.
It's executive board is drawn from the membership ranks, the CASID
annual conference is organized principally for and by members and is
being held at Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec, May 31st-June 2,
2010. The deadline for panel proposals is Dec. 21st so I would
appreciate the following by Friday, December 18th. This will give me
enough time to pull the proposal together over the weekend.
